MEET THE AUTHOR

V. Denise Shaw

Valerie D. Shaw is an author, entrepreneur, and community leader whose foundation in faith and service began during her childhood in Selma, Alabama, where she lived until the tenth grade.


Growing up in the birthplace of the historic Bloody Sunday voting rights march, she was surrounded by a legacy of courage, faith, and the fight for freedom and equality. Influenced by the ministry of the late Rev. Dr. Frederick D. Reese, a civil rights leader who marched alongside Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., she developed a foundation in faith, compassion, and service that continues to guide her commitment to entrepreneurship and community leadership.

V. Denise Shaw

V. Denise Shaw is an author, entrepreneur, and community leader whose foundation in faith and service began during her childhood in Selma, Alabama, where she lived until the tenth grade.


Growing up in the birthplace of the historic Bloody Sunday voting rights march, she was surrounded by a legacy of courage, faith, and the fight for freedom and equality. Influenced by the ministry of the late Rev. Frederick D. Reese, a civil rights leader who marched alongside Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., she developed a foundation in faith, compassion, and service that continues to guide her commitment to entrepreneurship and community leadership.


Valerie holds an Executive MBA from Pepperdine University, a Master of Science in Human Resource Management and Development from National Louis University, and a Bachelor of Arts in Design Management from Columbia College Chicago.

With more than 20 years of consulting experience, Valerie has built a career rooted in entrepreneurship, business development, and organizational leadership. As Co-Founder and President of Royal Rainn Corporation, she continues to develop ventures and initiatives that create opportunities and empower others. Her entrepreneurial endeavors include Soar Couture, while her commitment to developing future leaders extends to the Black Student Leadership Summit (BSLS).


Her dedication to community service earned her the 2013 President’s Volunteer Service Award, and in October 2025, she was honored with the Key to the City of Selma, Alabama, her hometown.


In her debut book, WAR Against Lies: The Stories We Believe. The Truths We Discover., Valerie brings together stories exploring truth, adversity, faith, and perseverance. Drawing on her own experiences, including the journey shared in Against the Armor, she encourages readers to question assumptions, examine the facts, and find the courage to stand for truth.


Now residing in Illinois, Valerie continues to pursue entrepreneurship and purpose-driven community leadership, guided by her faith and a commitment to helping others build meaningful legacies.


Beyond her professional endeavors, Valerie cherishes family unity and life’s simple pleasures. She enjoys traveling, leisurely walks, sharing laughter with friends and loved ones, and exploring diverse cultures through ethnic cuisine.
